East Corridor: Routes 3, 3a, 3b & X3 - Douglas to Ramsey via Laxey
The east coast corridor between Douglas and Ramsey is one of the most scenic bus journeys on the Isle of Man. Four route variants - 3, 3a, 3b, and X3 - follow the coastline north through Onchan, Baldrine, and Laxey before continuing to Ramsey, the island's second largest town. This is a route where you will want to sit on the left side of the bus for the sea views heading north, or the right side coming back.
The Route Corridor
Departing from Lord Street in Douglas, the bus climbs through Prospect Hill and Rosemount, past St Ninian's and along Glencrutchery Road into Onchan -- a busy suburb that merges almost seamlessly with the capital. The road follows the coast through Baldrine before reaching Laxey, the single most important intermediate stop on the route. Laxey is home to the Great Laxey Wheel, known as Lady Isabella, which stands over 22 metres tall and is the largest working waterwheel in the world. Built in 1854 to pump water from the lead and zinc mines, it is now a Manx National Heritage site. Laxey is also the junction for two heritage railways: theManx Electric Railway running the coast from Douglas to Ramsey, and the Snaefell Mountain Railway climbing to the 621-metre summit -- the only point on the island from which you can see England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales on a clear day.
North of Laxey, Routes 3 and 3a diverge. Route 3 takes the inland road through Glen Mona, a quiet and steeply wooded valley, before descending into Ramsey. The bus passes through Maughold parish on the main road but does not go up to Maughold village itself. Route 3a skips Glen Mona and takes the more direct coast road. Both routes terminate at Ramsey Bus Station, where you can connect to routes serving the northern villages (16, 17k, 18, 19, 20) or the west coast services back to Douglas via Peel (Route 5/6). The full journey from Douglas to Ramsey takes approximately 50 minutes on the standard Route 3, or slightly less on the X3 express.

The four variants are worth understanding before you travel:
- Route 3 - The standard service via Glen Mona and Maughold parish, with the most stops between Laxey and Ramsey (24 trips daily).
- Route 3a - Skips Glen Mona for a more direct route between Laxey and Ramsey (24 trips daily).
- Route 3b - A variant with limited service (4 trips daily).
- X3 - Express service with fewer stops between Douglas and Ramsey (6 trips daily). Most useful if you simply need to get between the two towns without sightseeing.
If you are a visitor and have time, Route 3 via Glen Mona offers the most character. The road through Glen Mona is narrow, deeply shaded by trees, and feels wonderfully remote - a stark contrast to the busy Douglas promenade you left behind.
Things to See
The headline attraction is the Laxey Wheel, but the east coast has much more to offer. At Dhoon Glen, a trail through native woodland leads to a waterfall that drops in stages over mossy rocks. A short walk uphill from the Route 3 bus stops in Maughold parish, the ancient churchyard contains one of the finest collections of Celtic and Norse crosses on the island.
Ramsey itself is a handsome Victorian town with a working harbour, the tree-lined Mooragh Park (with a boating lake), and the Grove Museum of Victorian Life - a time-capsule country house furnished exactly as it was in the 1890s. The town also sits at the foot of the Mountain Road, the most dramatic section of the TT Course, making it a popular base during race weeks.
